Consultation on ratifying UN Convention re Disabilities

Posted by Dave Bath on 2008-02-19

This is simply an alert to the opportunity to let the Attorney-General know of your support for the ratification of the UN Conventions on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which you can do simply with a one-paragraph email to

If you don’t support it, then p-p-p-ththththththt to you!

The full announcement, with links to the convention, "Plain English" versions, and the scope of the consultation is here.

Your response should be in by 2008-03-14 at the latest.  I’ll be sending a quick one-para "I support ratification" email in later today.

  • Here’s an extract from the AG’s page:

Australia was among the first nations to sign the Convention when it was opened for signature on 30 March 2007.  The Australian Government has now commenced the processes that will enable it to make an informed decision on whether or not to ratify the Convention . The effect of ratification is to affirm Australia?s intention to be bound by the Convention’s articles.
A large part of considering ratification involves undertaking a National Interest Analysis (NIA).  The NIA is a six-page document which, in this instance, will assess whether ratification of the Convention is in the national interest by analysing the impact ratification is likely to have on Australia and Australians living with a disability.
