Announce: Media sexualization of children inquiry

Posted by Dave Bath on 2008-03-13

While I’ve got little to contribute (except outrage at the current situation and support for the initiative), I must promote awareness of the Federal "Inquiry into the sexualisation of children in the contemporary media environment".

Send responses to eca.sen@aph.gov.au.

The terms of reference lists the more important requirements of the committee, to ….

  1. examine the sources and beneficiaries of premature sexualisation of children in the media;

  2. review the evidence on the short- and long-term effects of viewing or buying sexualising and objectifying images and products and their influence on cognitive functioning, physical and mental health, sexuality, attitudes and beliefs; and

  3. examine strategies to prevent and/or reduce the sexualisation of children in the media and the effectiveness of different approaches in ameliorating its effects, including the role of school-based sexuality and reproductive health education and change in media and advertising regulation such as the Commercial Television Industry Code of Practice and the Commercial Radio Codes of Practice.

I can’t see a closing date for submissions, but the report is due 2008-06-23.  It’s a complex area, and I expect the Rudd government to allow more time between the closing date and the reporting date so the result is a good report.  My guess is that you should get your submission sent within the next four weeks.

I probably won’t comment on this one because of my lack of expertise, but I hope others do, particular those who label themselves feminists and rail at the current disgusting situation.
