Other Himalayan troubles

Posted by Dave Bath on 2008-04-11

It’s in the Himalaya, the security forces are killing people, lots of political violence and wannabe separatists, but it isn’t Tibet.

In Nepal, police have shot and killed at least 7 people recently (see The Age 2008-04-09 stores here and here).  More background here (available for a short time), from which I quote:

Campaigning for the poll was violent, even by South Asia’s grisly standards.  Two candidates and a score of party workers were killed by rival party thugs.  A dozen bomb blasts, including one at a mosque last month that killed two worshippers, further blighted the process.

To me, it seems like this troublespot deserves more urgent attention and action from world powers than unfortunate Tibet.
