UN Environment Program notices 2020

Posted by Dave Bath on 2008-04-21

Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary General and Executive Director, UN Environment Programme, has noticed (approvingly) the 2020 summit in this press release.

Steiner talks about the good job programs like LandCare have already done, and how Australian research and innovation can be a major contributor to food security not only for ourselves, but for the world, and …

… point(s) to the inescapable fact that food security is intimately linked to national and international security.
A point recognized by Prime Minister Rudd in putting world food security on the 2020 Summit along with climate change and his call to “shake some new ideas loose from the tree”.

Yep.  The Howard government, along with coal-loving state governments, through climate change inaction, have done significant damage to our national security.

So, good environmental credentials are also good national security credentials.  Tell me a politician that wouldn’t like to get a good rating for both of these issues!  If Rudd misses the opportunity to improve the environment in the cause of national security, and win big-time with voters on two critical issues, he’s an idiot.
