(This got lost in my "drafts" tray for a couple of months, but with mumblefumbles in Obama’s oath of office, it is timely again.)
There is some discussion around about the appropriateness of daily use of Christian prayer in an Australian parliament, with Rudd and company supporting continued use on the basis that it is both traditional and espouses universal values.
If traditional words and appropriate values are the measuring stick, then I’d propose something like the following:
I promise to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
Of course, this line could be extended to include things like "putting the welfare of the entire Australian community and its place in the world ahead of my own political career", but that’s just to much to hope for.
