WOW! The impossible is now real!

Posted by Dave Bath on 2009-01-22

Do yourself a favor and go through the slideshow at Scientific American called "Sculpting the Impossible: Solid Renditions of Visual Illusions" (2009-01-21) – no trick photography or image manipulation involved.

Now look at the lithograph it is based on: "Relativity" by M.C. Escher.

Don't stick your Necker out

This unretouched photo reproduces the Necker Impossible Cube which inspired Escher’s "Belvedere".

Care to nominate a favorite from the slideshow?  Too hard for me!

  1. That lego Escher is awesome.

  2. BTW, did you know you’re in Online Opinion today?

Yep. Got an email from the editor.
And got infinitely more comments there by others in a few minutes than here since it was written.

How many evil parents will show the photo and say to their kiddywinks “here, try and make this”?

  5. heh heh heh. Now there’s a way to keep my very active and construction mad 3 yr old busy…

Hmmmm, getting them to contemplate impossible objects like Necker cubes is probably very stimulating, especially for pre-schoolers – if they are into constructing things which indicates they can appreciate the problem with the object.

Hmm. My 2yo grandson likes playing with his megablocks/duplo, but DEconstruction is apparently more fun than CONstruction, which is obviously what your 3yo is doing when not doting over your new one.

I cannot recall that being discussed in developmental psychology, but perhaps it could be put into the list of useful markers.

  7. Yes, I was showing Miss 3 how to make a sand castle and she shouted “And now we SMASH it!”, jumping on it ferociously. But if someone smashed her construction…well…all hell would break loose.
