Oz Gov Press Release includes bullshit – literally

Posted by Dave Bath on 2009-05-06

It’s odd to see the word "Bullshit" (especially twice) in a story in the Australian Government Media Releases feed, especially as the news item itself contains a few giggles – and not merely ironical ones.

Mind you, you get 3 hits (including one from the Department of Defence) when searching for bullshit in government media releases, but only the recent one when searching for bullshit in vetted releases.

Unfortunately, it’s not a CSIRO release about government climate policy, nor an honest review of the CPRS (all you can get on the revised CPRS is like the bullshit from Penny Wrong).

Also unfortunately, you cannot search for media releases that are bullshit, because there is no search that uses ontologies of truth and RDF available (or maybe because you’ll pretty much find bullshit in almost every release, so you may as well just list them all).

You cannot search "bullshit-by-omission" such as the Media release about Keelty resignation, in which I would have changed "Mr Keelty has led the AFP through a significant and challenging period, including events such as the 2001 September 11 terrorist attacks, the Bali bombings, the Jakarta Embassy bombing, the Indian Ocean Tsunami disaster and the 2003 Canberra bushfires. " to "Mr Keelty has led the AFP through a significant and challenging period, including events such as the 2001 September 11 terrorist attacks, the Bali bombings, the Jakarta Embassy bombing, the Indian Ocean Tsunami disaster and the 2003 Canberra bushfires as well as perhaps the greatest challenge: the Haneef affair scandal."

Actually, it’s a 2009-05-04 media release originally from the ABC about a NEW SERIES OF CHASER, which provides a link to the promotional video.

It seems the ABC media release has been "unvetted", and one of the other media releases has either disappeared or had bullshit removed.

I wonder when the rest will get tidied up, or a new policy down from on high about using the word "bullshit"?
