Australian Lefty on Politics, Governance, Science and Info Management

With friends like these 2 – BF4eva

The US rejected the Australian government’s request for details on upcoming leaks, a request to prepare for the fallout that, if Gillard’s hyperbole about the impact and therefore irresponsibility of the leaks is correct, needed planning for damage control.

Imagine this were a group of schoolgirls:

  • Anne has written in her diary all the gory details about the fantasies and doings of her "best friend 4 ever", Brittany.

  • Anne’s diary is stolen by Cass (the loner of the class), who announces she’ll be posting pages, bit by juicy bit, around the school.

  • Brittany asks Anne about what is in Britt’s diary to limit the fallout.

  • Anne refuses, apart from saying "some of the things you’ve told me and other stuff".

Now, I’d be most surprised if Britt didn’t call Anne a bitch-queen, then go to Cass all buddy-buddy, plead for mercy or at least advance warning, all the while complaining about Anne, giving Cass all the dirt on Anne (commenting what a loser Anne was for leaving the diary where it could be taken, and offering to plot revenge.

It should be noted that Anne’s days as prima donna at the school are numbered, with Danielle, who’s dad recently won the lottery, able to afford lots of new clothes and iPhones, is numero uno of a rival, and rapidly expanding, gaggle of girls.

Britt, silly teen bitch that she is, is still smarter than Gillard and the rest of the government.

Gillard is about as smart as Britt loudly proclaiming "Anne and I are still best friends forever – she is the one who accepts my offers of ciggies and alcopops.

Anne responds "Yes, Britt, you’re MY fave, my absolutely favorite, bitch."

Update:

(I’d heard about this, but hadn’t tracked down reliable sources):

It turns out that (in the dumb real world, not the metaphor of bitches at school) Cass went to Anne soon after getting Anne’s diary.  Cass asked Anne what would really bum her out if disclosed, and maybe she wouldn’t put that bit up on facebook.  Anne told Cass to piss off.

I refer to recent public statements by United States Government officials expressing concern
about the possible publication by WikiLeaks and other media organisations of information allegedly derived from United States Government records. I understand that the United States Government has recently devoted substantial resources to examination of these records over many months.

Subject to the general objective of ensuring maximum disclosure of information in the public interest, WikiLeaks would be grateful for the United States Government to privately nominate any specific instances (record numbers or names) where it considers the publication of information would put individual persons at significant risk of harm that has not already been addressed.

WikiLeaks will respect the confidentiality of advice provided by the United States Government and is prepared to consider any such submissions made without delay.

The US State Department refused this offer within a day (2010-11-27) (source Public Intelligence)

Despite your stated desire to protect those lives, you have done the opposite and endangered the lives of countless individuals. You have undermined your stated objective by disseminating this material widely, without redaction, and without regard to the security and sanctity of the lives your actions endanger. We will not engage in a negotiation regarding the further release or dissemination of illegally obtained U.S. Government classified materials.

  • THE US government refused repeated recent requests from the Gillard government to be given the WikiLeaks cables relating to Australia before their publication, so it would be better prepared to deal with their impact.
