Unjustifiable detention: Oz is one of the worst

From The Economist 2008-06-12 article "The longer arm of the law", you can see a graph of democracies and how long people can be held without charge. Britain is the worst, followed by Australia. Countries we might consider to be poorer examples of civil societies are much more devoted to such basic individual freedoms… in Oz, you can be detained without trial twice as long as Turkey, 3 times as long as Russia, and 5 times as long as South Africa.
It’s sobering. Think about it.
If KRudd and co want a proper civil society based on the liberties held dear in the European tradition since the enlightenment, then this needs to be fixed… fast.
